Thursday, February 3

Every second Wednesday, we have to leave the house for an hour and a half in the morning so that the cleaner can come in and do her stuff.  It’s not Marilyn’s choice but Leah is a filipina and the community all support each other’s little enterprises.  The philosophy seems to be ‘money is made round to go round’.  We usually take the chance to do some shopping or just have a cup of coffee somewhere.

This morning we planned to head down the highway to the next town where there is a celebrated bakery but, at the bottom of our street there was a new sign pointing up to the right ‘Longford Berries’ it said ‘PYO’ and ‘Café’.  Never having seen it before we decided to investigate.  We soon found ourselves on a farm track and came to a paddock with about 30 cars in it.  The place was buzzing with young kids, all picking berries (PYO, apparently, means Pick Your Own); there was a field of sunflowers through which someone had cut a maze and there was caravan selling coffee and wicked desserts.  It seemed to be the place for mums to take their kids on a school holiday morning.  It was not one of the super industrial berry farms with hectares of poly-tunnels but a much more personal, small-scale enterprise.

We had a very enjoyable morning tea, Marilyn bought some sunflowers to brighten up the loungeroom and we noted the address in our diaries for future reference.  Clearly it’s only a seasonal enterprise and that’s why we hadn’t noted it before.
