It’s interesting to watch the fall of a prime minister, if that’s what is happening.  Reading the opinions of the various commentators, most agree that it’s now just a matter of time.  The vultures are circling and wannabees are sharpening their knives ready for the final showdown.  Barnaby Joyce is the latest to get in his thrust; “I’ve never trusted him,” he said.  Good old Barnaby.  The epitome of a loyal deputy.

No one can deny that democracy is a better system than most for governing a country but democracy has a fatal flaw.  How could a system for choosing the best people to govern have thrown up Donald Trump in the US or Boris Johnson in the UK?  It’s because we don’t have a true democratic system.  The party system is the issue.  In the Australian situation, where Mr Morrison has, apparently, been found wanting, the people have no say in who will replace him.  Will his fellow-members of the Parliamentary Liberal Party choose the best person to lead Australia through these difficult times?  Perhaps, but their first priority will be to select the man (and it’ll certainly be a man!) who can best ensure they get back into government.

So, once again, the people who pay the bills don’t get priority.
